Osteopathy is a method of diagnosis and treatment developed in America in the late 1800s, by a man called Andrew Taylor Still. The underlying principle is that to maintain full health, all parts of the body - muscles, ligaments, bones, fascia, joints etc, must function with ease of motion.
The aim of the osteopath is to achieve this through a thorough consideration of the patient by precise palpation to establish areas of good function and areas that are not operating so well. The ability to accurately feel through palpation is of extreme value in assessing an individual. It takes many years of diligent practice to hone this most important aspect of being an osteopath.
All osteopaths will practice in their own style. My aim in treating a patient is to achieve results through accurate and gentle techniques. This will often involve holding areas and allowing the natural healing processes that are inherent in all of us to come to the fore. These subtle techniques are often referred to as Cranial Osteopathy, but it does not mean treatment only for the cranium. These gentle techniques are very effective to treat all ages and many conditions as listed below.
Every patient will have a physical history that needs to be understood in order to establish a and manage a treatment programme. The effect of trauma (both recent and not so recent), stress, and every day life, will all have a bearing on health patterns. Restoring a stronger pattern of health will enhance the ability of that persons body to harness the incredible self healing mechanisms in us all.
Paul Le Mesurier BSc. (Hons) Ost, DPO, FSCCO
I trained at the London School of Osteopathy from 1995 – 2000. Following this, I furthered my interest in Cranial Osteopathy at the Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy from 2002 – 2007. I was awarded a fellowship following this five year pathway of study. I worked and studied at the internationally renowned Osteopathic Centre for Children from 2003 – 2005, and was awarded the Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy.
At the start of my osteopathic career, I worked alongside Christopher Grey DO, in Hampshire for many years. I went on to establish my own thriving osteopathic clinic in West Sussex. In 2022, I moved with my wife and five children to Hartland, North Devon where I am now launching my new practice and I am looking forward to welcoming you.
Over the years, it has become more and more evident to me what a powerful healing force osteopathy can be. When I thought there may have been limits to what was treatable, I have time and time again been amazed at what can be achieved. What I have listed below is simply an indication of what can be treated, but this is by no means the whole remit. Osteopathy is limitless.
